This is probably the hardest thing for us to accept, that our furry friend is reaching the end of its life and it’s time to say goodbye to them. Even a whole life together wouldn’t be enough for us and it always feels too soon when the dreaded moment comes. As pet owners, we must all go through this tough time, at least once in our life. However, the news doesn’t have to come as a surprise. There are some key symptoms and behavior that can indicate when your dog’s time is coming to an end. It is worth noting that though some of these symptoms may be signs that your dog is dying, they can also be common signs of severe illness, and so you should always seek the help of a professional with a trip to the vet immediately before making any big decisions.
We have put together a list of signs that should common dog behavior before death, that may indicate your four-legged friend is nearing the end of its life:
1. Loss of Appetite
Mealtime is surely your dog’s favorite time of the day. They eagerly wait all day for the familiar rustle of their favorite treat packets and the clinking sound of their food bowl. Even if your dog is not really a foodie, they will still enjoy eating as much as we all do. However, if you notice that your dog is not eating or eating half of what you’ve served him, there is a chance that he/she is showing signs of weakness.
When dogs lose interest in their dog food, it can sometimes be that they are in pain. Though it is possible that the loss of appetite is being caused by illness as opposed to a terminal cause, so keep that in mind. Like humans, dogs during their end time, do not care about food all that much. Either way, if your dog stops eating for a prolonged period, it’s best to get them checked out by the vet.
2. Extreme Weight Loss
Dogs that are struggling with their health will often lose weight as one of the first signs that something is seriously wrong. It’s not just a case of dog behavior, before death dogs will begin to physically change due to stresses on their body beyond their control as your dog reaches the end. Weight loss can be caused by loss of appetite, liver failure, old age, dehydration, and when they lose muscle mass due to reduced movement.
Many dogs can experience severe weight loss as a result of terminal illness, however, weight loss can also be the result of digestion problems and a myriad of other potential problems. Try not to assume the worst and seek medical health
3. Lethargy
Both humans and dogs slow down as they age. The level of energy in their bodies tends to lower as a dog ages. They just can’t bring themselves to run like they would have even a year back. When your dog becomes old, they are likely to be less active. You’ll notice that your dog is just lying in one place most of the time and lacks the high-spirited nature they possessed earlier. Therefore lethargy is a key sign that your dog is dying.
They will try to move less and conserve whatever energy they have left within them to deal with death. Some of the other signs include your dog losing interest in their favorite toys and dog treats don’t seem to fascinate them anymore. If you’re trying to interest them with new things, they would rather ignore you and sleep for hours instead.
4. Untimely Vomiting
Vomiting might be because of infections, viruses, motion sickness, or other reasons. However, when a dog is in their last stages, they are likely to vomit untimely as their digestive system begins to shut down. The undigested food in their stomach will make the dog feel nauseated which is why the dog will vomit to clean up whatever is in their stomach. Vomiting is usually confusing. It may also indicate that the dog is seriously ill.
There are many ways that the dog can be made to feel more comfortable. Look for food comforting to their stomach and seek professional advice from medical experts to ease their end journey.
5. Loss of Coordination
If you notice that your athletic dog is stumbling or having difficulty with muscle control, it might be a sign that they are losing their sense of coordination. Balance issues stem from underlying diseases or other injuries and is a definite indication that a dog may be dying. On a different note, balance issues may also indicate ear infections or other health conditions. Again, if you’re in doubt, contact your vet to make sure that your canine is not suffering from any illness.
6. Difficulty Breathing
Although respiratory problems are common in dogs, they may indicate heart failure or other respiratory organ disorders. Your dog who could previously run for hours and never pant is suddenly getting exhausted and tiring too quickly. If you notice that it takes significantly longer for your canine to fully inhale and exhale, then it could be a sign of them growing old. In addition to that, if you notice that they are finding it difficult to catch their breath, or appear to have labored breathing, it might be a sign that they are nearing an end.
Odd breathing and open-mouthed breathing are not always one of the signs of a dog dying, however, as certain breeds are susceptible to breathing trouble anyway. So if you’re unsure whether it’s sickness or just part of the natural aging process, be sure to call your vet for advice.
7. Muscles Tremors
Remember the first point where it says that your dog will lose their appetite and not want to eat. The lack of food and water in their system will decrease glucose levels, making them weak. This lack of nutrition is likely to cause dehydration and therefore, muscle tremors and shaking will take place. Your dog will experience constant twitching. This is an involuntary response to their weak bodies.
Their body temperature is likely to drop dangerously low every now and then. This could make them very uncomfortable, so you’ll need to warm them up by putting on a heating pad or doggy blankets over them. This could make some last bonding moments between you and your furry friend before they pass away.
8. Bad Skin
Even though your furry friend is all covered with fur, you will notice the dehydration that a dying dog experiences will affect their skin. The quality and condition of their fur and skin will worsen day by day. It will become dry and rough, no matter how much you try to maintain it or try your best to keep it smooth and silky.
9. Dental Conditions
The bright pink gums of your canine will become noticeably pale. This is how you will be able to understand that their dental conditions are taking a turn for the worse. They may also have crooked, cracked, and loose teeth due to which they would be in extreme pain. Of course, your dog might have encountered quite a few dental problems, but you are the one who should check the intensity of the problem. If it seems too serious, contact your vet and they will be able to check your dog’s gums and teeth in order to clarify the problem or whether it is because they are dying.
Either way, your dog is bound to contract some severe dental issues, and this is also one of the contributing factors of your dog denying food or feeling a loss of appetite. In the last stage of your dog’s life, you’ll notice almost all the symptoms are interconnected with each other.
10. Loss of Consciousness
In other words, fainting. This happens when there is not enough blood flow to the brain. Fainting is rare among dogs and this usually happens when your dog is in a serious medical state. This clearly shows that your dog is in a dying state because fainting usually happens hours before they finally take their last breath. This is also a sign that your dog is seriously suffering. However, never keep a fainted dog untreated. You need to take action immediately and take them to the vet ASAP.
11. Confusion
Confusion and disorientation are common side effects of declining health. Your dog will be feeling weak as a result of the lack of food and water. This is bound to have an effect on their focus. Additionally, disorientation is a natural part of old age in all creatures. They may become forgetful, or wander around in an aimless fashion. The best thing you can do for your dog if this happens is gently to encourage them in the right direction and show them that you are there to support them.
Additionally, you can provide them with a few comfortable areas in the house that they can settle if they get lost moving from one area to another. It is common for a senior dog to forget where it is when they become confused – at the vest least a good settling space for them can provide some comfort and support.
12. Inability to Get Comfortable
Painful joints and ligaments are a common side effect of old age with pets. As your dog nears the end of its life it will struggle to become comfortable. It may be due to physical or mental discomfort. Their confusion can cause them to become irritable or stressed by their surroundings. Whereas any physical impairment as a result of an active lifestyle, severe trauma from their past, or side-effects of your dog’s condition can result in them struggling to find a comfortable way to settle down.
The best way for a pet owner to keep on top of their dog’s comfort is to ensure they have the best possible space to rest. Something like an orthopedic dog bed with a memory foam mattress may serve as a good spot for them to settle down.
13. Depression
Dogs are the best when it comes to hiding their feelings. But you as the owner can always articulate whether your furry pooch is happy or if anything is wrong with them. They will always express their happiness and joy if they really enjoy doing something. As your canine ages, they will no longer be involved in any activities. They would quit playtime. Worst-case scenarios occur when they don’t even enjoy being in your presence.
Do take note if your canine stops wagging its tail or showing enthusiasm. All this could mean that deep down inside they are psychologically upset and sad. The last stages usually make the dog create a distance from their human, but it is up to you to eliminate the gap and comfort them.
14. Incontinence
Your lively hyperactive dog may become incontinent. They might be unwilling to move from one spot and not defecate in the spot or during sleep. Alternatively, it could also mean severe arthritis. But canine arthritis is not life-threatening and can be controlled in many ways. They could also be sleeping incontinently. You could consider purchasing a dog diaper during such times to assist them in such circumstances.
15. Annoyance
Your pet dog may get confused and annoyed and might even bite one of your family members. Your dog would be very irritated psychologically and might even stop grooming themselves. If this happens, you must protect any other pets in your house because your dying dog might start picking on them too. Their annoyance could lead to aggression. But all you need to do is be patient.
You have to understand your pet is suffering from the inside and that they cannot even express their feelings in words. Just be comforting and persistent. Try to make their last few days bearable.
16. Neediness
Most dogs do realize when it’s their time towards the end. Dogs isolate themselves when it’s time for their death. If you notice that your dog is being too snugly for the last few days and one day suddenly they are lying somewhere, away from everything, it’s time they are showing signs that they are not going to live much longer. They also have passed you on their hugs and kisses through the snuggles. Dogs love their human companions unconditionally.
They want you to know how much they feel for you before they finally leave. In fact, if your dog is staring at you with adoration, snuggling on your lap at odd times and wanting belly rubs over and over again, this is actually a warning sign.
How to Comfort my Dying Dog?
We know how mentally tough it might be for you to prepare for your dog’s death. Well, all good things come to an end. And smile that your dog came into your life, and cherish the perfect memories you have together. Here are some things you need to do to your dog to make their final hours comfortable:
- Give them a place that is quiet and warm so that they can rest comfortably. Observe interactions of your dying dog with other pets and your children. While you may understand your dog’s situation, they might not. Just keep an eye!
- Try offering your beloved pet some food and water. See if he/she is willing to take it or not, but don’t force it on them. Your dog knows when eating won’t be of any use to them.
- Talk to your dog and pet them softly. Your dog will understand your love. Reassure your furry friend that everything is fine. Although it is extremely difficult, try to calm and soothe your pet.
- Make sure that your dog is not suffering too much in pain by getting them the required medical attention.

Facing the End Together with a Brave Face
Once the veterinarian confirmed the fact that your dog is dying, there is no coming back from it. By now, you also know that your dog is in constant pain and fear. Though you never wanted to see your dog die, sometimes there’s nothing we can do about a situation but accept it. If you don’t want your dog to suffer too much, you can consider euthanasia. This is often the most compassionate choice for both of you. Carry your dog to the vet and they shall be able to examine their condition and tell you whether or not euthanasia is the right choice.
Keep Them Comfortable
Make sure that your dog is comfortable even at the vets. Bring their favorite dog toy or blanket, that will make them feel at peace near the end. The loss of a pet is like the loss of a family member. It is never going to be easy to witness if your dog is dying, but it is so important that they know you won’t abandon them in their hour of need. Having a pet put to sleep is every owner’s worst nightmare, but do everything you can to stay with them and keep them comfortable. It may be that you feel the need to close your eyes when it’s happening, but try to hold them and stroke them – let them feel your presence, and know that you’re with them. They will need to feel your love in their final moments, just like they have their whole life.

We had beautiful labrador nearly 13yrs old 2wks of

Hi my story is I have many dogs already but my life is I go thru so many happy things with my dogs but turns out I can not keep all my dogs until they get old. I have issues I had to give then a great homes. They we’re cute and lovely boys and girls. I have not gone thru with my dogs getting old and I already cry everyday and Everytime I see many dogs suffering so many things like abused , and old age in there short life they should be with us like our age. Not dog age to get old. So I am so sad and think of this and cry my head hurts and eyes. I try to think of something else but I can’t . It’s hard for me.
My dog died because of fracture , can anyone believe this ? Exactly not !
My dog was taken to hospital once he fell down and then doctor said his bone is being subjected to fracture and took x-ray and conformed it . Then he said plate should be placed but due to lock down i don’t think materials will be available I’ll enquire and let you know within two days . He gave few painkillers and told to wait for 2 days . So we left that clinic and wanted to get second opinion and we went to govt. Hospital there were two doctors among which one lady doctor said there is an ortho doctor he can put plaste of paris and heal him so we went and met that doctor , we never know he wasn’t experienced doctor he treated my dog like a goat being treated in slaughter house he tied my pet hand up side down and pulled his hand very harshly we thought he is trying to help him recover and will put plaster of paris , instead it seems he broke another bone and covered it with bandage n gave him expired injection and tablets it seems . Till date my pet didnt bite any Veterinary doctor but he bit this person may be he knows he tried to kill him , at 1st he too said u have to place the plate later he changed his mind for money such a cheap doctor , we trust doctors for the life of our loved one but they play with lives for the greed of money . My pet was 7.7 yrs old lab , after returning from that clinic he stopped eating he started vomiting 5times , we don’t know these were the symptoms of my dog touching the death ? but till the last moment he was active he tried to get up n an hour before he was about to die he flapped his hands like a fish which is about to die , when he vomited we called that doctor and said all the symptoms but what he said was stop the tablets may be the tablets created some heat in his body so he stopped eating n vomitted . His tongue got very much dry like a land which suffers without water , the next day he had water milk and so we thought vomit stopped and he is ok till last moment he didnt show he was ill due to these medications and fracture pain he was very active and while we tried to feed him he put his head on the vessel in which we feed him food we thought he is dehydrated so he is weak , but the main reason was the doctor and his bandage procedure and medications he killed our dog , even though he had met with fracture he was rushing for walk with that broken hand but once we went to that doctor and bandaided him he stopped to walk eat n finally died , he looked in my eyes before he died , i said dnt worry baby god will save you nothing will happen but he died ? . Please be careful with such money minded doctors and be careful with the symptoms our pet show and save them

I lost my Callie 4 days ago and wanted to reassure myself that I did everything I could for her. Thank you ….She did pass in her sleep @ home. Although I felt I didn’t get many answers to my questions 2 days prior to her passing (at the ER) I think the ER dr. did realize she was older then I was told (rescue). I stayed up with her all nite and then (don’t understand it) fell asleep when she passed. I have been told that dogs will wait for you to not be near them. Is this true?

I love reading other peoples stories , it makes me feel so much better. When my cat was declining she actually came to me for help to get her stuck stool out for her as i am sure it caused discomfort for her. Then I would let her rest a then take her outside to rest on the cushion in the sun listening to her little crackeling as she was so happy, then she would start squinting and get real quiet. Time to go inside. She loved canned tuna so i mashed alittle for her mixed with a couple drops of milk or yogurt, Needless, to say 11:30 pm she started to crackle so i went to her spot and saw the end was near, she let me hold her and pass away in my arms.
She was my first cat i got from the rescue shelter and she lived a great fun 20 yrs with lots of love.

Hi and thank you for this article. I have been an extreme animal lover since I was four years old. Although I was never allowed to have a pet for long my grandmother would allow me to bring in strays, nurse them back to health and find homes for them. I did this all the way up until my sophomore year of high school when I fell in love with a stray cat that I simply could not let go. She lived for 20 years. After finishing college and getting my own place I would use my summers to foster pitbull’s who needed additional support, love and training so that they could be re-homed. I was OK with that process until I came across a dog who passed all the temperament and training test until he was rehomed. He came back to me three times before I realized he was meant to be my dog. He is Ginger-snappy a soon to be a 13 year old very loving and mild mannered American Staffordshire. We have been inseparable for close to 12 years. Fast forward to when I met and married a man who had a super spoiled male pitty with a few anxiety issues. Lupe was stubborn and set In his ways but he was still very trainable and within a few weeks he fell into a routine. Lupe is now 12 and has been diagnosed with spleen cancer and congestive heart issues. Although he is on a heavy dosage of Lasix he still looks as if he has swallowed an alligator. This is so heartbreaking because he is still full of life, his appetite is ferocious And he is rarely incontinent. I’ve had his belly drained a few times and to no avail. It goes right back to being a colossal bloated mess, which now makes some unstable on his feet. Tragically I know he is suffering because it’s becoming increasingly difficult for him to breathe. I know his time is nearing and I am spending as much time with him as humanly possible as I am an educator on summer vacation. I just cannot bring myself to face life without him. I know he will tell me when it’s time and I will follow suit accordingly. I am also scared for my other dog Ginger-snapper Because they have grown to be inseparable. There is really no point to this reply except for me really needing to vent and cope with my sadness. Thank you for providing an outlet. This is awful. Your pet is going to be in a scary place desperately looking around for you in its last moments. Stay in the room for their sake. You owe it to them.

I suggest, for those of you who ARE ABLE, if you do have to euthanize your beloved companion, STAY with them, talk to them softly, until THEIR last MOMENT. I , personally, will NEVER let one GO ALONE, without the sound of MY VOICE, & MY TOUCH. For ALL the unconditional LOVE, that’s ALL I could do in the END to make sure they knew I WAS THERE with THEM.

I found my dog 10 years ago I named her lucky because my daughter spotted her in the middle of the street she was eating out of a paper bag so I jumped out the car and picked her up we thought it was a cat,..we saved her from being run over by a vehicle no one claimed her so I kept her I’ve had her for 10 years don’t know how old she was. sadly a couple of weeks ago I lost her to cancer…the doctors also said she was anemic her gums was no longer pink but white she was so weak I took it to the vet they was like it was nothing we could do the next day I held her and I looked at her my mom was in my house with me, I said to my mom she’s not going to make it through the day and she didn’t I miss her so much she was a rat terrier mixed with a Chihuahua she was awesome
My baby Dusty I’ve had for 16 years has been sick for 2 weeks now. And Has not gotten any better. He’s very lethargic and has stopped eating. Has lost all control of his bodily functions and can’t take his meds. So we have made the unfortunate decision to let him go tomorrow morning. It’s breaking my heart. I haven’t stopped crying. We don’t have kids so he is my one and only baby. ????

My dog Ruby died. She was 14 or 15 y.o. She became weak one night the next day she was carried into the veterinarian hospital. I learned she was anemic and i knew it was internal bleeding but nothing more. In the short she was given Yunnan Baiyao and it seemed to be working. Still With a gain in energy I could tell she was pushing herself to see and go places she enjoyed. I could see it in her eyes that she was looking at these places with a look that said she was drinking it in for one last time. She had 48 hours that she was like her young self. It was her last happy hurrah for the next morning she made her decision to not take food and to fight against the medication. She lived 8 days from the onset of her crisis and she did it her way. She passed at home during her sleep with me beside her. She had been lethargic sleeping many hours daily for a number of moments. She had beccame very snuggly as well.

I have to take issue with the idea that if it’s too unbearable to be with your pet at the time of euthanasia then it’s okay to step outside the room. This is cowardly. As difficult as it may be for you, your pet needs you there with them as they take their last breath Your face and your loving touch should be the last thing that they see and feel as they leave this world. They’ll be time to grieve later, but show your pet this last act of unconditional love and kindness.

My dog has some of these symptoms and she’s turning 10 this year so I’m very concerned as she is part Lab so I’m spending more time with her except she don’t snuggle much and she seems happy playing but she did something weird, she was walking up the stairs then started panting, and layed down panting, then went in my room and sniffed for a few minutes so i started worry and almost crying cuz I knew she might be dying, then went in my moms room to sniff, then went got water but she does eat all her food and gets up to go to the bathroom outside unless no one lets her out and she doesn’t vomit often so I have hope also she still enjoys play time
My dog Donkey, a long haired chihuahua, stared at us at the vet when he died and never closed them when we chose euthanasia from congestive heart issues. We tried to close them but couldn’t. We just stared back at him as if he wanted to have us as his last memory. We left when his tongue started to turn purple. We miss him

It was heart breaking seeing my little one go quick. My vet assured me it was ok to “let go” of my suffering dog. No amount of $ couldn’t save him. He was very loved and blessed. Our German Shepard will be 14 on July 17, 2019 She has and had trouble swallowing since birth. For al but 14 yrs we’ve been spoon feeding her can food. My best furfriend and only born(puppy)boy is 14-1/2 human yrs old. His name is Dylan, aka the villian! He is my rock!! Finally beginning to slow down..sleeps a lot..still plays like a champ too. But just recently finding him to have worsening respiratory issues. His resp rate was more than 120 last night in his sleep. I laid next to him to comfort him if his heart failed. My dog has a metastases in his leg, I have been to the vets and basically, the best option we have is to make him live comfortably untill we can see he is in pain and then do the right thing and put him to sleep.
I have, however, changed his food to a healthy option, am giving him healthy supplements and hoping that will make a difference. I don’t want to see him in pain and if I have the slightest inclination that he is, I will do the right thing.
Although the vets told me he has a form of stage 2 cancer, (it only goes to stage 3) he is running around as normal, he hasn’t stopped eating at all and he seems to be himself, so I wouldn’t want to put him to sleep yet anyway.
I know one day it could all change, but untill that day comes I am going to do everything I can to extent his life and give him a good one at that.
I loath at people spending hundreds or thousands of dollars for farewell. Perhaps spending money comforts them for the compensation for ill treating their pet at some point in their lives. I love my 18 year old Shiba Inu who’s days are numbered, and I know I will bury him in my backyard when he dies. God knows HOW they (vets) will treat and dispose dead dogs and over charging everything.
I cannot express how much I appreciated this article. My fur-baby has been acting out of sorts and I’ve started to fear the worst. Though he is not showing these signs, Dante is, at the least, 13 years old and this helps me know what to look for in the future and also calm me down and not interpret every little thing as the end! Toby is a 10 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He has been with me for 9 years now.
2 years ago, I had some health issues and have been home bound ever since.
My wife goes to work during the day, and my stepson goes to school. So during the day, Toby and me spend a lot of time together.
Because of the health issues, I’ve become severely depressed. Toby gets me through the roughest times.
Toby sleeps a lot now, he still likes his walks, treats, and meals.
My dog is my best friend. I can’t even imagine what life would be like without him.
I think my dog might be dying…but my parents pay no attention to it….she won’t eat and barely drinks..she spends most of her time sleeping and eating grass… I love her with all my heart and she’s been there through really tough things with me…and I don’t want her to suffer…how can I tell if she’s actually dying?…
Thank you very much for these information. It is hard but as you explained dogs know and they do understand what is best for them. Not easy to watch them suffering at the end of their dog life. Our dog is 14.5 years old and is going through all of these now. Does not want to eat or drink water and only lays down and looks sad. If he doesn’t pass away on his own in the next couple of days we will have to consider putting him down to rest. May God forgive us.
I am on the threshold today acknowledging my senior is dying. We adopted her almost 3 years ago at the ripe age of 11. I had to make sure she recieved ALL the love I was capable of. Newton family. We are going through this now. My puppy is named Roxie and she got snake bitt a couple of weeks ago. The emergency vet gave her an antibiotic shot he said would last 2=weeks. She has had trouble walking and has frequent tremors. She appears to be in pain. If she rolls off a pillow, she can’t correct her position. She isn’t drawn to me and avoids me if she tries to walk past. She doesn’t seem to recognize me. She has still been eating and drinking. She’s still peeing and pooping. My dogs one eyed was rolled back yesterday and now today the same thing happened to the other eye. The only way to describe it is very sad puppy eyes. Has this ever happened to others ? My dog turned 14 last month and I feel she has been giving me signs this past week that her time is coming.

I have studied how to properly handle her after death and feel comfortable with local services and find separate ashes affordable so she can stay in the yard. My dear has 6 months to 4 years if I was betting. She has been healthy all her 12 years but has some weaknesses. She has a slight hereditary heart murmur. She has minor nerve issues. Arthritis only in one elbow. She had her spleen removed with a benign tumor.
I lost my beloved Tinkerbell I noticed that she started panting really hard as if she had just ran around outside and she started isolating herself she was really close to my brother who had passed in February and she passed away in April she wouldn’t go into the room that her and my brother shared but she was standing in front of the door panting looking inside the door she eventually made her way on night after I went to bed into my living room and went to sleep and did not wake up it explains everything now that I’ve read the signs and symptoms this is my first dog that passed away very heartbreaking but I miss her so much
No one should leave their dog alone to die with strangers. Suck it up and stay with them. They’d do it for you.
You should NEVER leave the room when your dog is being euthanized! It is a scary time for them and they will be looking for you for comfort. They don’t want to be in a strange room with a strange person when they feel the needle and need you to be by their side!

I recently had to let go of my everythg, he was 14 1/2 years old & although I felt for sure it was time, & being that he was near death a few times since he was 10 and was able to bring him back to good health, I started feeling like maybe it wasn’t time to let him go. I need to add one very important thing BE THERE WHEN THEY PUT THE DOG DOWN!!! They get confused and are looking for you. While its hard, you cannot let them go alone. I had my Roxy pass away on my lap at the vet. She was so weak. I think the first dose to just put her to actual sleep is when she died. My Stunner is next to be soon. I will be there for him too.
This article has helped me cope with my girl . A week ago she had ex rays and the pit come , I was told is cancer. Large mass on spleen and masses all over . No surgery was recommended, vet said she is ready to go, but I’m not ( but as the days go by, she is showing all those things, no aggression thank goodness. The advise on leaving the room during euthanasia is not good.
Sure it may hurt you for a while, but there have been many reports from vets that your best bud will be panicked, scared and stressed during that last moments of life and will be looking for you. Do you want them to feel that just because YOU can’t deal with it? Stay with them. Until the end. It’s the least you can do to comfort the life that has known you as family for its whole existence.
I had to say goodbye to 2 of my German shorthair pointers within 2 years of each other. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do, but we had our vet come to our house so they would be in a comfortable, familiar place, I was grateful that I could be there with them and be able to say goodbye, it was hard to be strong for them. Now I have another furry baby that is 12 and i find myself going down that sad road, but I know that I will be there for her and not let her suffer. My mini Poodle will be 18 years old on August the 10th. I felt the need of companionship after 9/11. We have been through think and thin and he has never let me down. Although I have people in my life no one will ever love me as much as him. I thank God for him every day. I am so very very thankful at this moment. My heart has been in such extreme pain due to the loss of my precious baby Boston Terrier girl Pearl.. This past January 29th, 2019, I had to make that decision and love her over the Rainbow Bridge to her final forever home and where her angel wings awaited her. It was the absolute hardest thing iv ever had to do. She was 11 years old and I had her beautiful soul in my life since she was 3 months old. She was , and still Is , my heart. I was there by her side, kissing her sweet face and singing her favorite song to her that I had always sang to her every morning. She had made it successfully thru the removal of a mass cell tumor in her that at age 4 and then crushing shortly after that, but she and I fought it all together. She was the strongest, most brave lol girl. She saved my life in the earlier years . She loved me so much, she was my REASON wen I was diagnosed with severe depression. Without her, I wouldn’t be as healthy as I am today. But… thru all this pain was the faint wise of doubt that the day I let her go, that mayb I should have waiting a little longer. I asked her the morning of the 29th if it was time and if she was ready… she came to me and licked my face all over , and that wasn’t her normal show of affection. I took that as her sign to me, bt since that day, iv talked to her and told her I did my best and I hoped that I made the rite decision for her, and not too soon… THIS ARTICEL PUT ALL MY DOUBT TO REST. My baby exhibited most all the symptoms of dying , and she had even started fainting , which at first I had taken as seizures. But her vet had told me the week before that her heart was very large and so was her liver. It happens all so fast, finally, so I let her go. I am crying now , but not all from sadness. Thanks to finding this article, my grieving has changed and now I can really let my girl go knowing it was the rite time to send her off to be a beautiful lol angel. Thank you for sharing this information. My Zoey is 13 will turn 14 July if God allows. She’s a diabetic for or half of her life. She has stopped eating to a degree which troubles me because of her insulin dependant. Her stools are watery whenever she goes to potty. She doesn’t take walks anymore barley plays if any sleeps all the time. I know we’re at the end. It’s very difficult right now for me to choose to let her go because I still hope she will eat and poop normal again, but the reality is she’s not. She’s only getting half of her insulin per doctor since she’s not eat. She normally get 7 units. I am so sad right now been crying since yesterday after the doctor suggest that I may have to put her down if the antibiotics don’t work for her tummy to control the overactive intestinal problem. Absolutely do not leave your companion in their final hour and final time of need because it’s “hard” on you. You have your family, friends, job, and life. Your dog only had you. Be there in their toughest hour, because despite how hard it is for you, your being by their side makes it easier for your best friend.

NOTHING could be further from the truth. When your pet is truly most afraid, in their most vulnerable state, the person who promised to love and protect them should be by their side. No questions asked. As someone who has observed the euthanasia of multiple pets, as well as the fear and confusion in the eyes of the pets whose owners “couldn’t stand to be in the room,” I ask that you revise your article to reflect the importance of being the source of comfort for your pet during their most intense time of need.

We came home from a long trip to the doctors in Seattle. We were gone 10 hrs. When we came back both dogs were excited. Boho, however was shaking and breathing so hard with his tough hanging out the side of his mouth. We were highly concerned. He is my daughters toy Pom, 16 years old. He slept with us that night and got up in the morning to drink. But he has a skiddish shaking fear of us now. Doesn’t like to be touched. Won’t play. Didn’t want any treats. The only way I could get him to come to me was with real meat, chicken. I’m concerned this is his last days with us. I’m not ready. Should I take him to the drs?
My red siberian husky is nearly eleven she as had 4 litters of lovely pups but over the last few days she as not ate and got no energy and lies in one place longer than she as ever done before her nose is bone dry and not drinking booking her in vets tomorrow

My dog was poisend and I just thought he felt I’ll I went away and nabours looked after him.. They phone me said Bruno is very I’ll I told them put him in house I will be their on Sunday his stool was a black color as I got home he had passed on the bed he died he had black stuff coming out his bum if I knew he was that sick .. I’m with my beloved Pogo as I write this, and I know that the time is very soon. I started to put her down on Saturday but because she didn’t seem to me to be in any kind of active pain (other than when she attempts to walk) that we could use the long weekend to be together and say goodbye. My dog is suddenly having labored breathing, she won’t eat, and she has gone outside and I can’t get her to come in. She also is exhibiting signs of confusion. She is dying right in front of me and I can’t do anything about it.
Our dear sweet Roxie is 17 human years old. How lucky are we that we’ve had such a long time with her as part of our family. She is exhibiting many of these signs and I know the day is getting near. I hope I will be wise and brave and give her dignity before she is in pain or distress.
My 2-3 month old pup is doing some of these. Moving around, and drinking on his own though. But is passing worms, and black tarry goey diarrhea. With bouts of vomiting maybe two to three times a day. Already had his vaccines and wormer Monday or Tuesday. Vet says he tested positive for Parvo. Another says negative. And the third said it was distemper. I’ve been nursing him with amoxicillin, Pedialyte, Pepto bismol, and beef broth. Don’t know what else to do!!!

Took my dog to the vets 2 weeks ago thinking he was suffering with hayfever to be told his got a huge tumour on his heart and there is nothing they can do for him . Shocked upset devastated are understatement. His laid on the sofa now twitching not eaten for 3 days now emotional wreck I am .
This article was very helpful. My Saja will be 12 in a few days. I know her time is coming. She puts on a brave front every day for me. She’s my soulmate and I treasure every waking moment with her.
She’s starting to slow down a little and she has slight issues with her hind end. I think she’s in pain, but she hides it well.
I try to keep myself prepared for the day she says goodbye to me forever. But I will lose a big piece of my heart.

I am in the throes of this situation right now. My dog has been blind for 4 years, and it appears that she is now nearing the end. She is now not able to stand up for more than a few seconds before sitting back down, and it takes her a very long time to muster up the courage to try to stand again. Her quality of life is almost at zero now, and I just pray for guidance that I intervene at exactly the right time. This is that one special dog that comes into every pet owner’s life and this is more painful than I can describe. I will be up early to call my vet, if I sleep at all, and get an appointment to take her in and assess things. Our rescue dog Daisy is 14 years old and is slowly nearing the end of her life. Due to my job ending i am able to make sure she gets all the love and attention she needs to make her life comfortable. Daisy has lost her hearing and sleeps a lot but she still loves her treats at night. I treasure this time we have together knowing it will end. I would try to convince myself that she wasn’t gone but cry every time I went downstairs to find she wasn’t there. The sad thing is, I never got the chance to say goodbye to my dog. She died while I was at school. I cried for so long I can’t even tell you. I know that she’s in a better place now and probably much happier running around with other doggies chasing butterflies in doggy heaven but still. I miss her. I enjoyed the article. I personally have never been able to leave my dear babies die alone. My vet is kind with me. I hold them in my arms and kiss them and let them feel every depth of my love. I’ve done this twice in the last 6 months and lost my 2 cherished pugs. I still cry over them. But I let them go in peace and love and that is a comfort
Just reading this makes me cry…I never want to see my dogs die although I know it is going to happen. I have lost so many pets in my life and swore never to get another one but I rescued my 2 babies and they have been with me for years. My life revolves around them. My biggest fear is that I go before them and no one will love and care for them like I do. I pray this does not happen. Hard as it will be I will hold them till the end. I wonder how it will be for the one that is still here. will he grieve for his brother and can I help him. They are brothers and one loves the other more than he loves him but they are always together. I have felt the pain of losing a pet more than once and it never gets easier. Ted has a lung tumor for the past year at least.
His breathing is now labored some of the time.
He runs around more times but he is breathing heavier after any exercise. and theres a lot of muscle twitching.
He is only 6/7 years old.

We have a dog now, who is not feeling too well,s she has arthritis in her hind quarters,is listless, and in the last few days has no ambition to do anything. She doesn’t want her favourite dog food,but will eat human food like frankfurters , Her hair is thick ,yet she doesn’t want anyone to try and groom it..I really feel sad for her. For her to get up from the floor is an big effort,so we try to keep a rug for her to lie on..she has very sore hind quarters..I wish I knew what to do for her.
My baby been poorly since April has had kidney disease been on antibiotics but have finished since then he has been refusing to eat ( he lives his food, always begging). He’s now breathing fast and noisy I know I need to call the vets but not ready to let him go yet xx
This is a useful article. I lost my Cavvy two weeks ago, very suddenly. it started off with an eye ulcer which took ages to heal up and so he was on lots of antibiotics. He also developed Hemorrhagic diarrhea. That was sorted with antibiotics again. We had about a week and a half of him appearing to be better before he got Hemorrhagic diarrhea again. This time it was fatal as it was overnight and by the time I got him to the vets, it was too late. His heart gave out but he did die with lots of pain meds so I’m hoping he wasn’t in any pain.
I do blame myself though as when he had the eye ulcer, I had just started him on Devil’s Claw for really bad arthritis. When he got the HGE, I stopped that immediately. When he was better, I started him on Loxicom for 2 days before he got HGE again and he died. I don’t know if it is coincidental or if it was just his time. The vet said he showed signs of Lymphoma in his blood tests. He was 12 years of age but still seemed fairly lively to me but I think on retrospect and if I’m being totally honest with myself, there were signs he was on his way out such as the ones mentioned in this article. It has given me immense comfort as I have been constantly blaming myself and the vets for not acting sooner. You know, what if the vet had given him a blood transfusion as soon as I took him there as he had lost an awful lot of blood through the night? But, deep down, I know he was on his last days/months. He was getting slower, refusing his food more, struggling with his arthritis, drinking a lot more water, drooling, lots of panting. One night when he was on my bed, I woke in the morning and thought he had died in his sleep. I kept shouting at him and eventually shook him quite vigorously before he awoke with a start. Maybe I should have left him then as it would have been better than my last memories of him basically bleeding to death :(<

This is a great article and has been a source of comfort for me and making the decision of having to put down my 15 and a half year old Chihuahua Noni who was my best friend in the world. She went downhill fast after turning 15 and had all of these signs that you write of and I did not want her to suffer, once she could no longer stand on her own and stopped eating I knew it was time to put her down. I had her put down in my home in her bed to relieve her stress and pain and although it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do I’m glad I was able to muster up the strength to do it before she got to a point where she was in total distress.
Thank you for this article, it’s given me a good idea of when my girl might be ready to leave us and I don’t think that will be anytime soon hopefully, although she does have some Liver damage the Hepaticare she takes seems to be controlling that, but we have just had to deal with a UTI which has been treated and is now clear. She is having full bloods done in two days time to see where we stand now with her Liver & Kidneys. She has been drinking a lot more than usual which points to possible Kidney damage. She does have arthritis but that seems to be under control at the moment. She is always ready and eager for food and regularly has small playtimes with us and my two small dogs. My girl Tess, is a Rough Collie Rescue, that we adopted when she was 6 and she is now 12.5 years old. We know we are on borrowed time with her now so we enjoy her as much as possible and try to keep her happy and pain free. Hopefully we will get to keep her a few more years if we’re lucky.

Thank you so much, I realized already some of the things that are in this article but some of them I didn’t, our Chihuahua is 15 or 16 years old and has a lot of the symptoms and is on four different types of medications for heart and liver collapsing trachea Cushing’s disease and she is almost blind she only weighs 7 pounds, we’ve kept her weight reasonable and we don’t feed her table food and she does get a little bit of exercise,

but at times she acts completely normal as the day goes on and then in the evening she seems to be suffering, whining and Coughing,
she’s our only dog and we love her dearly we don’t know how we’re going to live our lives without her, as we take her everywhere!

I have a dog that has a cough sneezing wheezing lethargic loss of appetite shakes. Took her to the vet. She has a lot of signs of kennel cough. However took to vet Monday and he seems to think it’s not kennel cough and it has something to do with her kidneys or pancreas. I had to put down my 15 year old Yorkie on April 26th. It was the most painful decision I ever had to make. I noticed he was going downhill for awhile. He mostly slept and still had an appetite but he suddenly had rapid breathing and a seizure. That was the first time he ever experienced a seizure so I had a feeling at that point that he wasn’t going to be here much longer. I decided to put him down so he wouldn’t continue suffering. I brought a blanket with me to the vet and made him as comfortable as possible before he was put down. I held him until he took his last breath. It was a painful decision but I’m glad I was able to be there with him during his final moments.
Last year at this time my daughter flew across the country so we could both be present for peaceful home euthanasia for our 17yo Boo, a 50# husky mix who became deaf, blind, unable to stand up on her own, renal failure from pain/antiinflamatory,etc over a period of approx 10 days. We separated the other 2 from her before vet came to my home and the 3 of us sat on the padded area I’d set up for her arthritis discomfort. We both stroked and loved on her, giving her peanut butter while she was gently sedated by vet and then given propofol. As an intensive care nurse in major teaching hospitals for 34yrs, while heartbroken, it was extremely well-arranged and kind. Vet also arranged service for her removal and our brave Boo that guarded us for 17yrs is now romping in the pastures back in dog heaven at the old farm she grew up on. Peace unto you.

My dog is going threw some of these things, shakes, hair looking dull, slow. There are times he does it feel up to going out, so I just try to make him comfortable, I realize the end is coming, it will not be easy, but I refused to let him suffer for an extended time. The vet knows this, instead of saying, it they want me to bring him in..they are the ones that put him on the vasotec lasix and tramadole ..
Gladys is my 13 year old puppy. I recently took her to the dog park and was introduced to a 6 month old pit bull who seemed to literally bring her back to life. Playful growling barking and going belly up and boxing like the other side of her.

Would you leave a dying friend or family member die alone? The suggestion of leaving the room before euthanasia is a horrible one. It may be easier for you but it’s so important to be there to comfort them.

I took my mixed breed to the vet this morning he said he had a kidney problem he gave him a ex. Of baytrill a friend told me that is not what you give your dog for kidney problem I looked it up. Now I am preplexed.why did he give him a med. That harms kidneys. I will call him tomorrow morning.he has been listless whch I thought was due to him being in a dog fight a couple of weeks ago.he was walking real stiff.i found blood on my kitchen floor,is how I knew some thing serious was going on.now I am upset.any ideas?

Mario was 13 year old cocker, his final days were just as reported here, in the end he came to me let me pet him looked at me and i asked him if he wanted to go out side, his tail started to wag, i was thinking he was feeling better, we went out i laid down on the couch, he came over gave me a kiss. Walked off and i thought was going to poop or pee, got up and he had laid down on the side of the house and died. Our family is crushed but know he is in a better place now. My sweet Lucie had a stroke this morning. Been a hard day. She is not in pain and has drank water and eaten part of her food. She is over 15 years old and a large dog. Been my best friend. Lost my husband and adopted her within a couple months later. Everyone loved her. I was waiting on a liver transplant and when my ammonia level was high she would warn me. My friends kept her while I was away having my transplant. She was so happy when I came home. Always was with me. Happy, dependable, loved all other animals. My chihuahua is laying with her and has been for a couple hours. She never does that. The chihuahua is always on my lap but not left her side. She knows things are not normal. Going to wait till Monday and hope we can get through the weekend without any pain. Certainly going to be a difficult few days ahead. I will choose cremation so that I can have her urn and ashes to be buried with me. Many years will be shed
These comments helped me so very much. My Hailee was an 11 1/2 year old very large breed. I noticed I’ver the last year she was slowing down and having back joint problems. We took her to the vet and got medication for her. It helped some.
I had a strange feeling on Sunday that something was off. Hailee has problems getting up and down the stairs , yet today she bolted down the stairs and charged across the street to see our neighbours dog. Next morning after a long night, she couldn’t get up the stairs to go the bathroom. My husband helped her and left her on her pillow at the front door. He stayed home from work and she waited at the front door, not moving until I came home from work. She was my dog.
She got up the stairs ate a huge supper, managed to get outside and cried as she did her duty standing up, and came back up to her pillow. I knew something was up, but didn’t really think, death.
I sat with her for five hours started the pants incredibly, this is where all the information I would and your site I followed. I kept calm and I tried not to cry and I laid on her bed with her and I kept stroking her head and massaging the top of her down to her back legs. I tried to give her water but she didn’t want it. I did put a little bit on my fingers and tried to put it on her lips but she was panting so hard now and your tongue was hanging down so far all I want to do is stop panting.
I kept really calm because I just read it I kept telling her it was OK and that I loved her and she stopped panting for one second and gave me a little kiss, and then went back to panting. As the panting progressed she took her paw and I thought she was giving it to me but what I think she did was try to push me a little further away. So I moved back and sat on the side of the bed to look at her. In that moment my husband came upstairs as she stopped the painting. I asked him if she was OK she looked up at him really quickly and then turned to look at me and died.
I’m heartbroken and I’m going to be for a long time. My old girl waited for me to die almost died in my arms in her own bed in our bedroom. I’m not feeling it just yet but I’m being told by many if there is the best way for a pet to die is the way mine did.
I am so glad I read the information on your site on the same day she died and I followed it and I honestly think in my heart because I stayed calm I gave her the piece that she finally needed to pass away.

I am afraid the closest I am to one of our fur babies is showing many of the signs described in this article. She is 11 years old. This behavior has come on suddenly. About 4 months ago, I adopted a 6 month old kitten and he is quite the rascal. He and my older cat play until long after we go to bed. They all three sleep with me. Our 13 year Akita/Husky has been acting strange for months now and there’s been multiple times I think it’s obviously the end (not eating, very low heart rate, whining, legs collapsing) and then suddenly she gets a bit of energy and runs a lap in the backyard just before asking for food. This is a helpful article but I must disagree strongly where it says it is okay to leave your dog when it undergoes euthanasia. He or she has seen you through your bad times, faithfully and loyally by your side. Therefore it is your duty to be with him or her at the final moments. Do you not think he or she needs you then more than ever? Yes, it is desperately sad and excruciatingly difficult and painful for you but it isn’t about you, it’s about them. Please do not abandon your beloved pet but be there for them as they have been there for you.
My boyfriend *cough* *cough* ex boyfriend has this very sick Teacup Yorkiepoo and he is in so much pain & suffering. He smokes right beside his dog and feeds his dog shitty foods ect. In other words he should put the poor doggie down or give the dog to somone who can take care of the poor thing. Poor Hoss dog. And he sends his dog to his 81 year old mothers house and comes home sick everytime. He doesnt take care of his dog at all…poor thing..his dog is having all the things listen above..very sad.
Chloe was 18+ yo & exhibited many of these signs, she refused to eat eventually. Dad was also 3 weeks behind her at 96+ yo with similar symptoms. Mom had passed away 5 years earlier, as Dad & dog both seemed to lose interest in living in the final weeks. Seemed like they were waiting each other out, but seemed to know that the general coinciding of their times had come, to be reunited with Mom. All 3 have a new home at the cemetery. When I told Dad I had buried Chloe cremations next to mom, he had the biggest grin on his face I had seen in awhile. A day latr he was in the ICU for 5 days. They got him stable enough to get him home and into about a 4 1/2 day hospice.
Prior to Chloe’s passing, I had taken her to the cemetery to be with Mom. Chloe in her last year or so was cataracts blind, had never been to the cemetery, ever, but she led me to where Mom’s headstone grave marker was on her own. She stopped on her own and laid next to Mom’s grave marker. I stayed there with Chloe for 45 minutes, Chloe didn’t want to leave. Driving back home, a dog that rarely to never barked, became very vocal leaving the cemetery from the parking lot to the driveway at home. Until we got back home and she stopped. That spot where she laid was where her cremations were buried. And where Dad’s went, nobody, but I knew where Chloe’s cremations were, but Chloe’s cremations are within fractions of an inch of being located 1/2 way between Mom & Dad’s grave markers. Nobody directed the burial location of Dad a few months after his cremation. Crazy how that worked out as a coincidence ? They are in their new, right-sized home for eternity. The last year I had the luxury of remaining locally & close enough to visit the 3 of them.

Our Border Collie Jake passed yesterday. It was his 15th birthday 2nd April the day before he passed. Suddenly he couldn’t stand up we tried to help but he just fell to the ground and lay there. He layed in one spot all night and didn’t try to move. Incontinence hit and we knew it was near the end. We comforted him and he would wag his tail a little but you could see in his eyes he wasn’t 100% lucid, it was like he was fighting off falling to sleep. We took him to the vet, to be told it was his time. He had started to shake and his gums were very pale. We took him to the shelter to be Euthanaised. As sad as it was it was the right choice. As we placed him in his blanket on the ground he tried with all of his might to get up but, couldn’t, we knew for certain it was his time.

Thank you for this article. I felt so guilty, thinking I didn’t do enough for my baby at the end but the desertification everything you said was exactly what was going on. I still feel a bit guilty thinking I overfed him to cause his pancreas to overwork, on top of his kidney problem. Although, I will never understand how fast everything progressed….week ago he was fine, not liking his food but still himself. Then I heard a raw diet was best for kidney and fed him raw hamburger. It was the first time he was interested in really eating. Then again, I went to give him a piece as a treat and he wanted nothing to do with it….from there it was downhill. In a matter of 3-4 days he just declined. Then he was doing just about everything you described. I’ve felt terribly guilty as my veterinarian advised to put down verses going to UC Davis and putting in the hospital. After reading this I feel my vet may have made the right call as my dog was going off and hiding like he knew he was dying. Thank you for the explanation and validity that I more than likely did him a favor and took him away from his pain.

I know this all too well, unfortunately. We had our Zoe for almost 15 years. She stopped wanting to take walks, moped all day long, balancing issues – sometimes falling down the stairs. On her last days, she stopped eating, vomiting, wouldn’t take her meds, was shaking really bad and even started to cry – very loud. It was so sad. This first started happenening about 2 months prior to her vomiting and not wanting to eat. We put her to sleep right after. We just could continue to watch her in pain. This happened February 2018 and to this day, I am still so heart broken I can’t even look at another dog
Loved the article but have to disagree with the idea that if we can’t bear being there the final moments to wait outside the vets office. Please don’t leave your pet in the time they need you most. I’ve been through it a few times and felt extremely sad but very proud of myself for being right next to them for live and support just like they were there for me when I needed them most.
I put big red to sleep yesterday with th help of my daughter . A big shout out to th kind nurses and doctors of Baldwin animal clinic in corpus Christi tx !! This article was very much reasurring to say the least. We have been told our 16 (human) year old dog has a failing heart. She is showing all the signs in this article. It’s a very difficult decision to make…wether we keep her going with the odd good day or take the harder option of ending her pain for her.
This is a great article with, in my opinion, one exception. The part where if you feel the need to leave the room if your companion is being put to sleep. I can’t even imagine the stress that they’re going through at that time. I just feel that would be very selfish to leave them alone for that last moment of their life when they have been with you for so many years. I understand it’s hard for us, but we must make decisions like that and to leave our faithful companion at that time, like I said, seems very selfish when they have given us nothing but unconditional love and happiness.
My family and I are in this situation at the moment as my beloved Melon having her final days. This is my first time and its leaving me with a tremendious sorrow and pain. I don’t want to ever let my best friend go. Life isn’t fair. We get these amazing creatures to shed stress free amazing love to us for just a short time. My buddy is a chihuahua and Jack Russell mix. Ugly creation, but one of the most obedient and loyal souls you could ever meet. I want to thank the world for letting him find me. He gives me courage to over come complete medical anxiety and panic attacks. I stick my nose into his fur and hold him so tight and just his presence is enough to back off the strongest anxiety attacks. I won’t ever love a thing like I have the love for this beautiful soul. Appreciate your pet. One day they will be gone. And if you have any kind of love like I do for my friend, your world will crash around you. He breathes still as I write this and he seems so helpless. I’m gonna comfort him till the morning and take him to the vet. I hope and pray, that he makes it. I just won’t know what to do with out my sword and shield. My family and I have become distant and my beloved pet is really all I have in this cold world. I wish every one into the world that finds this post the best of luck. And if you go through what I’m going through, I apologize with every thing in me.
My old lab female dog has in th last two months developed several large hard tumors in her groin. Then she began panting at night. Now she has SUDDENLY has bulging red dilated eyes and is walking into walls, and th weight is falling off of her, is it cancer, already metastasized into th brain ?! TOMOROW I HAV th money and an appt to put her down. But what if I’m wrong ? Sh still walks and eats !! What if its only glaucoma and hernias !! I just feel she is in pain and at age 10 to 12 she won’t get well. Please comment, she’s th BEST dog IV ever had, at my age great grandmother raising great grand kids, BIG RED is my LAST dog, I’m getting crippled, ANY ADVICE ??

I don’t know how I stumbled on this, but it was a very good read. I wish I stumbled upon this a year ago when our black lab that was 13 collapsed while on a walk. Once we got her home she showed almost all the signs you have mentioned. Now I know what to look for in many years to come when our doberman puppy life is near the end. RIP Obsidian.
I thought my dog had a sudden onset of seizures a couple weeks ago, but as memory played back, I realize he’s been having seizures for about a year and I’ve heard them in my sleep. His labs came back fine and he’s been put on Keppra. He had 4 grand mal seizures in 3 days. Two I witnessed and two I witnessed the aftermath in which his body was still not working right. He’s 11 yrs old. I’ve noticed he’s not quite right anymore. He never completed snapped back or it’s the meds. He’s not having seizures, though he seems to shudder a bit at the top of his breath in. I also notice he twitches now at times. Does it sound like he’s nearing the end of his life? He still has a good appetite and he has get up and go yet, when I prompt him. While it’s incredibly difficult to think about losing him, I do not want to prolong a life he’s struggling in.

Just lost my beloved Chocolate Pomeranian .14 wonderful years five months 13 days.I miss him badly.One of the greatest joys of my life. He saved my life.In his hour of need I couldn’t save his.I loved him deeply.
Saying goodbye is hard !!!!! I just sat with her. And brushed ming. She loved it. I wish they could live for 30-40 years. But that’s not life. Some day we will see them again !!!!
Very helpful as we were considering taking our precious dog Lilly (18 yrs old) to the vet and asking him/her to send her to heaven. Not now though after reading yr article. She loves her food and still gobbles it down!!! She is, of course, not mobile but she doesn’t seem in pain. She certainly doesn’t scream. She cant see but seems to love pottering/ albeit slowly in garden. So, as I say, we are not going to vet at moment.
Horrible to tell owners it is ok to leave the room in the end. How awful for them to die terrified and looking for the one person that eases their fear.

My 13 year old diamond is got though it right now. Its breaking my heart we are giving her till Wednesday and if I see no change. We will take her in to let her go over the rainbow bridge peacefully.

Bella our 7 months old Boston Terrier is in ICU receiving IV fluids (this is her second visit) As a hospice nurse I face death every day, but she is part of our family. When I got a puppy I expected her to live much longer! She has had all these symptoms. At 4 months she was house trained, I came back from a short vacation and noticed she was having incontinent episodes. Her breathe was dreadful! She quit eating and was excessively thirsty, and would vomit water. Kidney disease can effect dogs of all ages, I would have loved to have 10 years with her! She brought joy to our lives! Bella, RIP
My dog died in a boarding kennel . I feel such guilt I left him there alone. I desired him. I will never get over that feeling. The kennel owners were not caring about it.i regret I did that to him.i should have keep my first instincts not to leave him. He was old.in bad condition. Was stressed in there.never left him in winter .I think he froze to death. Could not handle cold .was . I think he thought I deserted him and gave up.i love my dog and will always miss him. My sweet boy Dax passed on Feb 19th, I’ve never had a pet in my life until now. He had conjestive heart failure and it happened pretty quick. He was on my lap and jumped off, mind you when someone knocks on our door or someone comes in our house he’ll bark at them. Well my husband’s oldest son was at our house but before he came dax threw up in the kitchen and it was pink in color. I didn’t think anything of it and Joe was standing in the doorway and dax very quietly walked over to him and was wagging his tail, I’m assuming he may have wanted some lovins or wanted joe to pet him or he was making peace with him. Aft that he was throwing up blood like 3 or 4 times and he walked over near the entertainment center and sat but collapsed and it realy scared me so my hudband grabbed him and put him in his bed and he was laying in front of my husband and he was acting strange and that’s when I realized he was diying and i grabbed him and held him and he was profusely defecating and urinating. I was scared and freaking out. I layed him down in his bed and he was having a hard time breathing and i felt so horrible. I was rubbing his head. I was telling my husband, “grab those, grab those !”, not being specific and keeping my hand on his chest and could feel his heart beats become slower and slower and by the time i went to put the piece of the stethoscope on his chest it was too late. His heart stopped and i was so very devasted, and to top it off i also had a mild heart attack the day after his death. I feel so guilty that i wasn’t calm before he had passed. I will never ever forget him. My daughter’s mother in-law had bought me a necklace where it has some of his ashes in it, i will never ever take it off and will wear it till my diying day.
I lost my beloved Sharlotte years ago,and sometimes the pain is as if it happened yesterday. She was 19.5 human years old when I lost my sweet baby. I had the vet euthanize her to avoid her suffering. I held her in my arms as she closed her eyes for the last time. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but after all the years of happiness and unconditional love she gave ,I couldn’t bring myself to leave her when she needed me the most. This article has a lot of really important information for pet owners. No one will ever love you the way a dog does,I am lucky to have had her in my life. Many months later,because Sharoltte was a rescue, I decided to rescue another dog to honor her. I am now the proud owner of two beagle rescues.

Lucky Lady, my 9 year old pug, recently died. Over the last few weeks we noticed that there were puddles of piss around the house. Not normal even though we have/had 5 dogs. Coming back from an overnight trip, she was the only one not to greet me. Once I saw her I knew something was wrong. There was a sadness about her. Her once curly tail was almost straight down and she refused to eat or drink. From the animal hospital to the emergency care center. My baby died of cardiac arrest within 6 hours. Cause if death they said was keto acidosis. Glucose level was 1221 with a possible pancreatitis. She survived a stage 3 mast cancer only 8 months prior. Through the whole process of adopting her to the end, this dog was a true friend. Devoted and loyal. My wife and I are heartbroken, but we have our other dogs, and like us, I’m sure they are grieving as well. For them, we must remain strong. Extra hugs and kisses tonight. A few extra minutes of scratching their ears. Pulling on their tails, then snuggling up in bed, all together. We know she’s still around. A few times Logan, the three year old, ran to go into the bedroom , then stops still like hitting a wall just at the doorway. Shes here still, with us. Maybe just in spirit, but here. RIP Lucky Lady.

Nice article but I do not believe that a dog who is normally scared at the vet should be left without you in his or her last moments – your pet gave you everything – the least you could do is be with them at the end. If they are family, the no one let’s family die alone.

Thankyou for this advise. My girl Milly is 16 and although she still loves her food I am noticing some of the other symptoms. She doesn’t seem to be in pain but I can tell she is not very happy and she is panting a lot more. She had 10 teeth taken out a few months ago, I though I was going to lose her then but it has helped her enjoy her food more and not be in pain.
I know it’s not long now and it’s breaking my heart but I know how lucky I am to have had her in my life for so long.
I just do not know what else to do, I just spent 400.00 dollars at the vet today and my doggie is still the same

My dog Shaggy died today. We had him 11 1/2 years, the longest I’ve ever had a dog. He was getting weak only ate 2x in 8 days and I knew his time was near. My dog passed 2 weeks ago,she was my everything,I loved her so much,it hurts,I’m in so much pain,I cry every day we brought her home n buried her by our house, hubby,put a head stone,I want to see her.we took her to d er left her ,right away put her on 02 ,told me.did cpr,,but she left us.with saying goodbye.
My family and I adopted our Maltese, Toby, at the approximate age of 7-9. We’ve had him for 4 years, as of now. Recently, his health has been deteriorating, he has become completely blind eye to cataracts and partially deaf. Last night he began extremely lethargic and his head kept drooping, to which my parents brought him to the emergency room. I’m unsure as to whether he had a stroke or if he is dying. I just want you all to appreciate every joyous moment and learn from those of hardship. Thank you, Toby for giving this 16 year old boy the best 4 years.

My 19 year old baby Sage was euthanized this morning. I’ve been debating for several months whether his time was getting close, he’d gone senile, staring at walls, whining and barking for no reason started using the bathroom in the house being aggressive towards are other animals, he could hardly see, could hardly hear, but seemed happy for the most part. This weekend he stopped peeing and pooping eating or drinking. I never wanted him to suffer and I pray I didn’t wait too long, but at 7 a.m. this morning I took him to our vet. I’ve had him his entire life he will be deeply missed.

My grand dog died tonight, not quite two years. We looked after him for the week while my son’s family were away for school break. He declined all week. He spent trip days with vet and came home with no diagnosis. We’re so sad tonight but snuggled him to the end. We also had to contact his family who are now grieving so far away. My thoughts are with you. I have lost 3 goldens. It never gets easier. Presently my 11year golden was diagnosed with lymphoma. I swore I do never do chemo. Bit without it she only has 1-2 weeks. Had to try. Still not totally convinced I am doing the right thing. I guess she will let me know if I am doing the right. Trying to be with her as much as I can.
I Love all dogs with a strong passion, my own dogs present an past furbabys ,there is no Greater Love ,which they give you , all unconditional, only one bad thing about owning a beautiful furbaby ,,,,,,,? Thank you. Our rescue beagle who was very ill when we got her 7 years go, has begun to lose interest in snacks and seems lethargic. We have shepherded five pets through death before, but this seems much harder as we are now both in our 70’s. I think losing a pet when you are closer to the end of life is particularly hard.

We have just had to have our 4th beautiful dog euthanized last Saturday. To go through so much heat ake is very stressful. We have had our Chihuahua Tiki for not quite 13 years from a pup. He was just one specials dog. But he was poppys little boy. Every time you turned around he was always there. The last 6 days of his life with us , he would not eat anything. But only drink.He was very week and could hardly stand up, so we made that very heart ake decision. R I P our little boy. You will be in our hearts forever. Mark @ Angie. ?

Sigh. My doggo Lucky is about 13 human years old. I had him when I was 10 and I’m about to be 23 soon. I literally grew up with this energetic dog. Thank you for this article. I lost one beloved dog two years ago and her final night she wouldn’t eat and not knowing forced some food in her. Now her buddy is failing at 14 a lhaso apso. He sleeps constantly but is still getting good. He was sleeping on the couch next to me but now sleeps on the floor about 6 feet away. On a walk a couple of days ago he laid down so I carried him home. We only go short distance one block. His happy eyes are now sad. I pet him and talk to whenever he is awake. He was 14 months when I rescued him and he knows how much I love him. I’m spoiling him the past few months as he dines on salmon.
His love and devotion have been unconditional. I love you Cotton!
Its so hard to lose a pet. Especially if he is your only family member. I still mourn my cat who got diabetes from overeating dry food. He was 7 lbs overweight.

Charlie has seen many family members pass on including our Son, Lance just 18 months ago. I know Lance is around and will be here for when its time for Charlie to wag his tail one last time too. We had our female Havenes, 10 years, 70 in dog years. She developed Cushions disease, heart murmur and just last week, we were advised to put her down, instead of the Vet doing patch work. Cheena was a small (11 lb) black/white sweetie. She was my door bell.◀️

My dog Peanut, was euthanized by my vet when he had suffered a stroke. The night before he had pushed himself into my face to stare at me and then gave me a hug. I didn’t pick up on the cues until the next morning when I let him out to potty when afterwards he suffered a stroke. He was my close companion of 11.5 years and suddenly he is gone. It is not even 2 months since he has passed and I am still grieving. I miss him terribly.

This is so sad. My golden retriever is my best friend and is now 12 years old. He does have kidney issues so I had to put him on a low protein diet. He is suffering virtually all the symptoms listed above.
I think our dog Memphis is going through the same thing. She’s been a wonderful dog. I probably took her for granted way too many times.

I had a Labrador 12 years old. He was very active . He use to jump, run till his last. Was always very fond of foods. He will be eagerly waiting to take his food. For the last 2 days he dint eat and the last one day he was not able to move much n was almost sticking to 1 or 2 places n not moving much. He took only water. I’m still in a very deep shock that he is no more. Im also wondering a pet being so active can leave us n go in just a days time with out any health issues. I am so very hard broken, Today in the morning I found my beautiful female Golden Retriever without warning dead in my upstairs hallway next to my bedroom. She was approx. 9 years or so old, did eat her food and treads the day before, we went also on a 1 hour walk together. We went to bed, I gave her her usual treat, which she did eat. I do not know what could have happened to her over night! she spend the night next to my bed for some petting, did sleep all night next to my bed, and just to find her dead in the morning in my hallway.
Sara was a big girl, 105 pound also in size huge not as your usual Golden Retriever, LARGe! Fur and Beaty beyond measure, good disposition, loved everybody, wanting to great everyone we met at our daily walk, everyone admired her being so very beautiful in looks and disposition.

I lost my dog a couple of weeks ago her name was lucky she had cancer and she was anemic she had become so weak and not eating I took her to the doctor who said she was very ill. It happened so quickly she had just had her regular physical 2 months earlier. I found her 10 years ago and named her lucky because she was in the middle of the street eating out of a paper bag and my daughter said there’s a cat in the street mama get it but it was a dog the day she died I knew she wasn’t going to make it through the day she wouldn’t eat she was weak I just held her in my arms I didn’t want to let her go I loved Lucky she was my baby she was a rat terrier mixed with Chihuahua and I miss her so much
