IAMS voluntarily recalled a single production lot due to aflatoxin being detected above acceptable levels within the production facility. The product was immediately recalled from store shelves and no illnesses were reported:

March 15, 2007 – Unfortunately for IAMS they became embroiled in a scandal alongside other pet food companies due to a Chinese supplier of vegetable protein contaminating their produce with melamine. This was brought to light after certain foods were reported or making pets repeatedly sick. It was later discovered that melamine was being used by said suppliers to mimic protein and make their vegetable protein appear to have higher levels of protein than they actually did (melamine is a plastic that contains protein).
